What I liked

Everything about the internship was amazing. I enjoyed the people, the work itself, and the culture. I really loved that my colleagues all wanted to support me and help me grow during the summer. I also had a great team of other interns alongside me. Its' my favorite experience thus far and would not trade it for anything.

What I wish was different

I wish it was in person but I also got to meet a lot of different interesting people via zoom across all USA offices so I made the most of it.

Advice

Reach out to people and get to know what the culture is like. Definitely do your due diligence and get to know the work that is done and don't be hesitant to reach out to me if you have questions as well.

summer analyst

June - August 2019 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

I liked how well they trained interns. Initially, it felt like i was drinking form a fire hose with all the info in such a short amount of time, but many people were willing to help me learn along the way. Additionally, the skills I learned have helped me even beyond the internship.

What I wish was different

I think my experience would have benefitted from more organization form leadership in terms of feedback. My manager would often delay on getting feedback for my work and therefore i never really felt like i was receiving feedback from my Project Managers. There were also times in which, although many people were willing to help, I felt like I was expected to have some knowledge that was not taught to me, and therefore struggled to succeed at times.

Advice

I would say to any individual planning to work there, be very proactive about feedback with your managers. If you feel as if you are not receiving feedback, be quick to ask and check-in to avoid any surprises later.

Health Consulting Intern

June - August 2019 • Cincinnati, OH

What I liked

This internship allowed for personal and professional growth. I was treated as a full-time employee and was assigned many projects in a fast paced environment which I enjoyed. Attending client meetings and meeting client deliverables allowed me to see the day to day roles as a consulting analyst. I enjoyed the responsibilities and independence that my principal and associates entrusted me with and I appreciate the continuous guidance throughout the internship.

What I wish was different

Nothing really. This is an individual experience and so with open communication, coworkers are more than willing to give you a variety of work so that you gain a better understanding of many different areas.

Advice

Ask as many questions as you need but be independent. Always be prepared to take on more work as you will learn more and more. This job is definitely baptism by fire but Mercer is a very supportive environment that will meet you where you need and where you want to go with your career interests. I couldn't ask for a better team to work with.

Actuarial Intern

June - August 2019 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

I enjoyed the variety of work I got to do over the summer. I was able to take notes on client calls, work on updating complex models in Excel, compile deliverables for clients, and present on a topic to the office. I felt I was able to learn a lot and that the work pushed me. I also found that the people I worked with were very smart and great mentors as I continue in my career. Additionally, there was a great group of interns that made for a fun and social summer.

What I wish was different

I worked in the Government Human Services Consulting department at Mercer, which I enjoyed. However, it would have been nice to have a little more exposure to the commercial side of the company.

Advice

Speak up and ask for help and assignments! Everyone in the office wants to help you and is very kind, but they can get busy with their work and might not notice if you are struggling or don't have enough work. All you have to do is ask for help and work and you will have a great summer!

Health & Benefits Consulting Intern

June - August 2018 • Washington, DC

What I liked

- Great internship program: you get a people manager and 2 mentors, and have to complete a final intern project that you have to do in front of the whole department (from the senior partner to first-year analysts) - They allow you to have real client-facing experiences where you can present to the clients

What I wish was different

Advice

- They don't come to GW, so you have to network your way through - They are very big with finding an intern/full timer who fits in with their office/company culture - They put a huge emphasis on curiosity and desire to learn

Creative Strategy Consulting Intern

May 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Working in the city was amazing. I also learned so much about what it is like working in a large global organization. I also significantly improved

What I wish was different

I wish I didn't have to take the bus to and from work every day. Some days I wish I could've worked remote because of the long commute also.

Advice

I would recommend asking anyone and everyone what they do and ask everyone for things to do. With a lot of internships it's easy to sit there and avoid work but by asking for projects you have the chance to learn something new and network with a lot of different people.
