Undergraduate Research Assistant
June - August 2022 • Cleveland, OH
What I liked
It was a very helpful research opportunity that gave a good experience for boots on the ground public health research, as well as a lot of professional development opportunities. The pay was very good and driving for the job was reimbursed at a good rate.
What I wish was different
I live about an hour away from CWRU campus over the summer, so it was difficult to make that commute four times a week. Also, payroll was very difficult, where I wasn't paid much during the start of my internship, despite needing to pay for large amounts of gas, as my research required driving around Cleveland.
Advice
If you are financially able to, it might be worth it to stay near campus over the summer, even if you live in Ohio.

Biomedical Intern
June - August 2020 • Cleveland, OH
What I liked
It was a privilege to listen to some of the foremost researchers in biomedical engineering in the nation. Also, the design challenge provided a quasi-real world engineering simulation that has helped me become a better writer and problem-solver.
What I wish was different
I wish this experience could have been in-person as the hands-on experience would have given me more chances to develop my skills, both professional and engineering specific. However, due to COVID-19 this internship was designed to be fully remote.
Advice
Take any opportunity that comes at you seriously because you never will know when it could be one of the most eye-opening experiences of your career yet.

CanSUR Summer Scholar
June - August 2019 • Cleveland, OH
What I liked
Cancer Focused Summer Internship - I was paired in Dr. George Stark's lab which was an amazing opportunity. I got the best of both worlds working for CWRU in the Cleveland Clinic. Hands on research experience, mentorship was incredible.
What I wish was different
The onboarding process for the Clinic took so long that I lost 2 out of 10 weeks worth of work which was a major bummer.
Advice
This was the first year of the CanSUR program. It is better than being placed straight in the clinic with the other JCU program, as there was a support system in place at CWRU to aid. Plus, working and meeting people at 2 institutions is better than just 1.
