About the Role

At UW Sustainability, we see this internship as a chance for a student with lab experience and a passion for sustainability to make tangible contributions while learning how systems change happens. You’ll work on projects to build up the UW Green Labs Program to help make UW research labs more sustainable—like developing guides and engagement materials—where your ideas can become real tools used across campus. You will be building on the great work of your peers: in 2024, a group of POE (Program on the Environment) students produced a University of Washington Green Labs Proposal laying out 6 proposed green labs initiatives based on extensive research on existing programs at peer universities along with published literature.

What You’ll Do

  • Research sustainable lab practices at other universities
  • Create or refine green labs protocols for student lab assistants (e.g., defrosting freezers, shutting the sash, sustainable purchasing, green chemistry practices, recycling practices)
  • Evaluate simple visuals or web content to promote sustainable lab practices
  • Support updates to the UW Green Labs website and outreach materials

Who You Are

  • You’ve worked in a research lab or have coursework that gave you lab experience
  • You care about sustainability and want to make research greener
  • You enjoy working independently but appreciate feedback and collaboration

What You’ll Learn

  • How lab operations connect to UW’s broader sustainability goals
  • How to communicate sustainability practices effectively
  • How to create resources that change real-world behavior
